In a major crackdown on inter-state terror module, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday (September 19, 2020) arrested nine Al Qaeda operatives from West Bengal and Kerala. Raids were conducted at West Bengal’s Murshidabad district and Kerala’s Ernakulam district in connection with the Pakistan-sponsored terror module. While six Al Qaeda operatives were arrested from West Bengal, three were apprehended from Kerala.

The IED had gone off accidentally at the time of its fabrication by the members of the banned terrorist organization - Jamat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh (JMB). The members of JMB had taken that house on rent for the nefarious activity of bomb-making. Two accused persons succumbed to their injuries caused in the bomb-blast and one accused survived with grievous injuries. The case was initially registered by the West Bengal Police and was subsequently taken over by the NIA for investigation. The investigation by NIA revealed a conspiracy by JMB to radicalize, recruit and provide training in arms and explosives to its members in India to commit terrorist acts and wage war against the democratically established Governments of India and Bangladesh.

The incident happened on Sunday night when a woman along with her relatives and a few others were celebrating the birthday of her 15-year-old daughter at the restaurant in Phoolbagan area. The three accused, who were consuming alcohol sitting on another table in the restaurant, allegedly started making indecent gestures at the women and girls and making lewd remarks on them, a police officer said. The three were also accused of taking photographs of women using their mobile phones, he said, quoting the complaint lodged by mother of the girl. "When protested, the three allegedly attacked the women and outraged the modesty of the complainant," the officer said, adding that CCTV footage of the restaurant is being checked.

According to the complaint filed by the woman, the driver had misbehaved with her late on Sunday night following a quarrel over switching on the car AC, the police said. The woman, who is in her mid-30s had booked the cab from Behala to Garfa at around 11.30 pm. As per the woman's complaint, the driver after the quarrel tried to take her photographs and then allegedly molested her.
